The Cabochon cut is the oldest way of turning a rough rock into a gem. Up until 300 years ago, this was the only way gems were cut. The best way to display colors and other optical effects in opaque or translucent stones is to cut them En-Cabochon, with a rounded upper surface and a flat underside. Hardness is also taken into account as softer gemstones with a hardness lower than 7 on the Moh’s Hardness Scale are easily scratched, mainly by dust and grit. This would quickly make translucent gems unattractive - instead they are polished as cabochons, making the scratches less evident.
Certain rocks, such as Lapis-Lazuli and organic materials such as Amber or Jet are not minerals, but are still used for jewelry, and are therefore considered to be gemstones as well.
